I recently had the opportunity to combine the new addition to my life with my love of drawing. I became a mum in January 2019 and it has been as incredible as it has been challenging. As I immersed myself in the new world of motherhood I came across the social media account of Isabella and Us. With a focus on supporting maternal mental health, Isabella and Us provides a quarterly publication called the Positive Wellbeing Zine.
I was intrigued to know more so I ordered a copy of the 4th issue and I have to say, I loved it! The heartfelt articles were all about the balancing act that is motherhood and I read the whole thing in one sitting. I realised this was the first time in a long time I’d just sat and read something purely for my own enjoyment. It was wonderful!
My First Time Illustrating
Isabella and Us regularly asks for contributions to the publication, including illustrations. I was inspired by the drawings I had already seen, and so I created a few of my own.
I submitted these to Isabella and Us and they were accepted for the next publication. When I received my copy of the magazine, I was very excited to see my work in print.
I’ve really enjoyed discovering the many mothers out there setting up their own businesses. I reached out to Emma Cottam, who founded Isabella and Us, and she kindly answered a few questions I posed to her. I wanted to find out more about her and share it so others can enjoy her work as well.

Tell me a little about yourself
I’m Emma, I’m 28 and from Freckleton, Lancashire. I live with my husband who has been by my side for nearly 12 years, our two cats, Pippin and Luna and our 17 month old Daughter Isabella. I run Isabella and Us., which I set up four weeks after having Isabella, where I am the founder, creator and editor of the Positive Wellbeing Zine for Mums and I also create a range of other products, to help empower parents. Through Isabella & Us I also aim to share and discuss honest parenting, wellbeing, self care and to also share my experiences of post natal depression. Alongside this I also work full time as a Photography Tutor teaching post 16 education at a local College.
What is your Positive Wellbeing Zine about and what inspired you to start it?
The Positive Wellbeing Zine for Mums is a quarterly print publication of all things motherhood and positive wellbeing. It is more than ‘just a magazine’, it offers inspiration, information and relaxation for mums. The Zine is filled with a selection of articles around motherhood and positive wellbeing alongside beautiful illustrations and photography. Each issue focuses on mums being able to take time out for self-care.
It is A5 in size with 72 pages of lovely articles, illustrations and is the perfect size for a mum to carry around in her bag, keep in the car or on her bedside table, to take out and read when she has five minutes free.
I started the Positive Wellbeing Zine for Mums in September 2018 as I felt there was a need for a magazine for mums, about being a mum. I wanted to create something that offered mums support, guidance, inspiration and advice from other mums, talking about the things they might be going through. It is beautiful, calm book of positivity, inspiration, real advice and love.
What are your hopes for its future?
My hopes for it’s future is that the readership continues to grow and grow and that it becomes recognised as a much needed resource for mums. Because it is so important that we, as a mums, take time out to nurture and look after ourselves.
What are the three best things about your life as mum?
The three best things in my life as a mum are:
- Watching my husband and the relationship him and my daughter have – it’s so special!
- The new drive, passion and focus I have
- Although we’ve been through the hardest months and years since becoming pregnant, having Isabella has changed our lives in ways we could never imagine.
