About this Thoroughbred portrait
This photograph is a perfect example of the high quality, well-lit image that provides the ideal base from which to draw a portrait. The subject is a Thoroughbred ex-racehorse mare who I used to own while I lived in Canada. The photograph was taken as part of a professional shoot that a friend bought for me as a gift. When I saw this picture I knew I had to get my pencils out and draw it!
It’s quite a few years old now, so I may revisit the subject again to see if I can improve on it. I tend to feel a sense of urgency when I draw a portrait as part of a commission. But since this thoroughbred portrait would just be for me, I’d take my time. I’ve been fortunate to have been involved with horses all my life and this mare is, and always will be, the most beautiful horse I’ve ever known. I have a soft spot for Thoroughbreds and racehorses as I can’t help but admire their power and athleticism. Their sleek coats and well-defined muscle and bone structure makes them ideal for detailed pencil drawings.
